to be honest, most r&b these days is so autotuned and horrendous and factory made, that i can't stand it. luckily, there comes one gem every now and then that proves to be the exception to the rule. this track, produced by christina's fiance, the-dream, is so understated and wonderful that i want to make babies with it. it's so sparse and under produced that it almost comes out sounding electronic (with the harmonizing voices and humming), which is such a contradiction that it makes me love it even more.

yes you can. in honor of q-tip's show at the gallivan center last night, here is a song that he did that got the place stupid silly. he also played a ton of tribe songs, which was dopeboyfresh, and he got up on the speakers, (as pictured above) which made the bouncers up front visibly nervous. such a great show. every hiphop show that gallivan has put on has been amazing. coincidence? probably. but it won't stop me from jumping to conclusions. that's what i do. i'm a blogger.

an amazing thing about design is that the core principals of the craft apply to all the different branches of it. it's all essentially the same—the relationships between objects, color theory, form vs function, practicality, usability—it concerns graphic design as much as it does web, product, packaging, etc. i've recently (the last few years) become really interested in interior design. like graphic design can do for a product or item, interior design can add so much to where you live or go. a clever use of color or space can transform a room into whatever you wish it to be. the above four pictures are examples, in my opinion, of great design.

1: the simple white backsplash makes this one. it offsets the beautiful deep green and dark wood cabinetry just enough that a person won't be overwhelmed with all that rich color. it also works wonderfully in combination with the exposed bathtub-like (edit: farmhouse) sink.

2: the colors in this picture are extraordinary. with the walls in that dark slate green color and the floor painted in a just lighter shade, the hot pink table jumps right out at you, and in the words of the dude, really ties the whole room together—even though it stands out so much. without it, the room would still look and feel nice, but it wouldn't have that factor that would make you want to stay in it.

3: i'm sure this has been thought of before, but when i came across this picture, i felt like i was hit across the face. of course that's how you can make a corner shelf look good. the curved edges and bright color add to it as well. i'd love to have this right next to my desk. i could put all my third place swim team medals and trophies on it to show off for the babes.

4: i don't know if this one necessarily classifies as interior design, but i don't really know what it would be put under either. illustration? art? anyways, as soon as i saw this picture, i told myself that i was going to do it. it'd be cool to find a large window or sheet of glass, mount it on a wall somewhere, and just go nuts on it with marker. it could be that central piece to a room, just like the aforementioned hot pink coffee table.

this movie looks amazing. partly because i hadn't heard anything about it until i saw this trailer. but mainly because i love the way it's filmed (reminds me of black hawk down or friday night lights style cinematography and music) and the idea of alien "intruders" being a political thing. so cool.

i did some research and the film is based on this short film by the same director, neill blomkamp. it's only six minutes long, but it is fascinating and gets me excited.

also, i wish i had a south african accent. i'd be elbows deep in babes. for really real.

so i've decided to start a new little section for you dear readers. please, please. settle down. thank you. as you can see, the section has been imaginatively titled "things that are above average." in it, i will post things that i find reflect above-average qualities. most of these things, i'm sure, will be design related. as a sidenote, you are all encouraged to buy me what is posted. it's the least you could do.

i absolutely adore the retro packaging that general mills has rolled out for some of their cereals. it is infinitely better than the rest of the cereals that adorn grocery aisles. actually, i don't know. maybe only designers and those older than 40 will enjoy these throwbacks. either way, they're beautifully simple and childish—in a good way.

the shoes were done by hayon for camper. great colors were used without adding bells and whistles and things that aren't needed. spruce up those wingtips a bit, shouldn't we? i want them all.

killspencer makes a legit bag. all the fabrics are military grade and the attention to detail is stunning. i'm a fan, to say the least.

despite the emo connotations that forgive durden bring up for me, their latest album was one of my favorites of 2008. razia's shadow is just an unapologetic musical that has great melodies and is really well put-together. it's not going to win any awards, i don't think, but it's fun and really surprised me. it could have been incredibly corny, but was thought out enough to strike that balance of artistic license, musical theory, and light-heartedness. plus, i like the album artwork. it's like a black and white cookie melted and couldn't decide if it was happy or sad about it.

and let it be known that i probably have a place in my heart for musicals (soundtracks only, please) because of being raised by a mother with an unquenchable thirst for broadway and disney soundtracks.

the university of utah really does put on some great shows through the asuu. this past thursday, they booked brother ali/matisyahu for the night. it was an outdoor show right in "the free speech zone" right next to the union. a bunch of people showed up and it was great.

here are a couple videos from the show. they're terrible quality because they were recorded with my iphone (it's jailbroken) and i was recording portrait style and had to crop and rotate them all, blah blah blah. whatever. they'll give you an idea of what you missed out on because you're all suckers and i'm better than you.

i loved the dark knight so much that i decided to draw a picture of heath ledger's incredible joker. the film was so well done. all the hype was completely justified. for me right now, the battle for best picture of the year is between this and wall-e. everything else just pales in comparison. i saw it in the imax theater and it blew me away. the cinematography, acting and writing were all so good. i can not wait to see it again.

wall-e was seriously the most tender, heart-warming movie i've ever seen. pixar has outdone themselves with this one. i know i can be a bit of a cheesy guy, but if you don't find yourself smiling throughout this whole movie, you either don't have a soul, or you've had way too much botox done. the animation is incredible, but the way pixar advances the story without any dialogue is genius. it's story telling at its purest. this movie really should get a nod for best film—in any category—not just animation. it's that wonderful. it is my favorite pixar movie by far.

this was probably the best concert i've ever been to. i am still in awe thinking about it. i was expecting greatness, and my expectations were exceeded. needless to say, next time kanye is in town, i'm there.

here's the breakdown:

lupe fiasco - kills it live. absolutely perfect. he is next in line.

n.e.r.d - throws a party. pharrell has got it down. not only do they dj, but they use a live band as well... with two full drumsets. it's sick.

rihanna - girl can sing. also, she is hot like fire. i'm going to marry her. screw you, chris brown.

kanye west - between the incredible stage set (giant led screens, moon terrain, lights, etc.) his flawless delivery, and the stripped down, bass heavy, live orchestrated songs, i almost peed myself. kanye might get on some people's nerves, but he backs up the game he talks. he knows what he's doing. for this tour, he's turns the show into this space opera of him crashing on an alien planet and trying to get home. he uses this backstory to connect all of his songs seamlessly. except for the slight break when he plays hey mama (understandable. his mom recently died pretty tragically), he rips through everything straight. it's pretty incredible.

once i get the pictures and videos from chelsea, i'll throw them up to back my claims of incredibility.

or is it whores sex in the city? oh man. pun. words cannot describe how dumb i think this show is. actually, no. as a male, i actually have to applaud the creators of the show for coming up with something that so masterfully caters to female fantasies. they tapped into every girl's insecurities and made millions.

i mean, the women who watch the show are given a main character who manages, despite being very average-looking (and that is a generous adjective), to end up with a tall, handsome, successful, wealthy guy—mr. right (or big, i should say.) this definitely appeals to the female fantasy of being an ordinary woman who still manages to snag a man (who might be out of her league) who satisfies all of her needs for a protector/provider.

then you have the most attractive woman on the show ending up with the short, bald guy, thus both satisfying the need of the average woman hoping to see the beautiful one end up with a nerd (while simultaneously sending the message "look how noble we women are—we don't care about looks!")

then there's the female character who satisfies the "have sex like a man without getting emotionally involved" fantasy. and lastly of course, there's the final character who satisfies the need to have a realistic character who actually acts sort of like a real woman in the real world.

the show is basically an excuse for girls to fantasize for two and a half hours. i can deal with that. just don't say it's "good." it's not.

by the way, dressing up in cute dresses and drinking cosmopolitans before going to this movie is no different than the 40 year old guys who dress up like stormtroopers or gandalf.

ps. sarah jessica parker gets turned into glue at the end of the movie.

Richter7 took us all to the new Indiana Jones movie today.

My review: it seemed like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were
rushed to make this movie. Why? Oh, I dont know. Maybe Harrison Ford's
impending death? Luckily, I wasn't expecting too much. It was fun. I
guess that's all its meant to be. My advice is this: leave all reason
at the theater door. There are plot holes. Because of this, I have to
give this movie my worst rating ever..7 thumbs up.

this one if for a website. it's pretty cliche and run of the mill, but i'll be damned if you don't want to press that big, friendly ask button.

this guy is for a student group that is trying to help students with depression. they plan on setting up a blog where students can anonymously submit their feelings and comments about their depression and receive feedback and help. spill is an acronym for something, but i can't remember what it is. the idea of the logo is about spilling your guts, don't cry over spilt milk, etc.

i had nothing to do at work the other day so i made this.

in scholastic activity, i did this website mockup for our final phase of our project with the travel company. since we didn't actually build these websites, we had to include some explanatory writing as well to help... um... explain each page we created. i've included that for you, gentle reader.

The homepage acts as an introduction to the brand. Nothing but a slogan and imagery is needed to set up the user’s experience. The simple navigation bar with drop down menus supplies the means to acquire any information needed.

After clicking on the about us option, this page is available. It is a simple summary of what the company is about and the ideals it holds.

Under packages, there are a list of options available. One of these options is weekend getaways. When clicked on, the
user is brought to this page. There are a list of cities provided, that when clicked on, bring up this box with information about the package. A scrollbar is included for when there is more info than can be displayed at once. If interested in the deal
he or she is reading about, the user can click on the pencil it in button to the side. This places the preliminary “order” for the package. It is basically the same as a shopping cart. The user would then be able to change, edit or modify their itinerary whenever needed. When satisfied with their itinerary, they would be able to purchase and book it.

(i blocked out some phone numbers and email addresses from some group project members. the interweb is dangerous. at least it said so on dateline one time.)

so i've been interning at richter7 for a month and some odd days now. things are going really well there for me. they've even got me actually designing things. heyooo. here are two things i did this past week for them.

we're doing a complete overhaul of neumont university's brand; their website, identity, logo, stationary—everything. they threw me a bone and let me design the logo for their national newsletter they send to all their alumni. here it be:

this past weekend, my buddy max put on an art show at byu even though that place sucks. it was called the alphabet show. he had some of my art up under the letter n for narrative. on a side note, i enjoy using italics. the whole thing was pretty cool. as part of the show, he got funding to fly out clint miller, who is quite possibly the most talented man i have met in person. for a little background, he is an incredible musician who can play a crazy amount of instruments, is an internationally published poet and philosopher, is an award winning playwright and also goes to harvard. yeah, i feel unaccomplished.

my friend tyger knew clint from his hometown of abingdon, virginia and gave me clint's cd a couple years ago and i've been hooked on it ever since. i think that was a run-on sentence. damn.

here are some pictures from the art show. they're kind of crappy because they're taken with my phone so don't judge me. that would make me sad if you did that.

did i mention that byu sucks? everyone there is only interested in flirting and finding a spouse. that's the only reason they go to any kind of event. they're rude and don't pay attention to anything. it feels like high school there. i wanted to punch a bunch of people in the face while i was there but i didn't because that would be assault.

anyways, tyger tried to get clint a real show while he was out there, but couldn't find anything (which is a shame) so we had a nice little show in tyger's basement. it was pretty sweet anyways. did i mention clint is an absolutely amazing musician? here are some photos of the show.

after the show, cole, kesia and i took clint and tyger to my place where we laughed merrily and discussed many things that were humorous and funny in nature. then, in the morning, i took clint and tyger to the airport and i was sad.

suffice, to say, clint is a great guy and all of you should go buy a copy of his album, ballad of a modern day cowboy. it's well worth the money.

Sweet Pea,

So I'm sitting here in Sanctuary waiting for my friend Kesia to get
done her spa stuff. I'm bored. However, there is something good to
report to you, good reader. I bought some dirty nasty new shoes. They
are my present to me because I got the internship at Richter7. They
are the premier ad agency, creatively at least, in Utah. They're
pretty well respected. I am excited because this internship will be
great experience and an awesome thing to have on my resume when I
graduate. That way, when I finally do graduate, I can get the job I
want at some sick design agency in Los Angeles, where I would never
have to bitch about the weather and where the beer flows like wine and
women flock like the salmon of capistrano and where run-on sentences
aren't looked down upon. That would be great.

i'm not sure if that spanish is correct. one semester of spanish and a one week trip to costa rica doesn't make me fluent. deal with it. stop judging me.

so yeah, this is gonna be a biggy. i figured i'd post some of my school stuff, new and old.

logo for: vuelo

we were to create a travel company, name it, and define the type of travel they would cater to. for example, mine caters to the first class demographic; people who have money and like to have things taken care of for them, so that they can simply relax.

vuelo is spanish for flight. the idea of the duck/goose is to play on the idea of freedom and flying and migration. the subtle, soft, abstract shapes help to support the relaxing aspect of the company. the three shapes are also abstract enough that on second and third glance, one can see different things, almost like looking at clouds.

i'm not sold on the color version yet. there are a million different color palettes i could go with, and none of them seem to look right to me yet. i might just keep all the shapes one color. i don't know. we'll see.

this was for the magazine we had to design last semester. the first one's color is a little messed up and i can't figure out why. the magenta is supposed to be like in the second subordinate page.

we had to design these direct response packages that would normally be sent by our magazine to potential subscribers. i designed mine to have a letter printed on vellum that wrapped around the actual card. that way the potential customer would have to interact with it a little more.

annual report for: cox mediacorp

this was the last project last semester. after we had created our magazine, we had to come up with a parent company that would have owned the magazine. i settled on this one. the most boring name ever. whatever. anyways, we had to create a theme for this annual report, explain why it would be a relevant theme to the company, and then design it accordingly. i chose connected, with the basis that a company that strives to keep connected with its customer base will stay relevant and thrive.

we had to design the cover, opening spread, president's letter, and financial pages.

now praise my design skills in the comments. i am very insecure.

bon iver's for emma, forever ago is, without being too dramatic, stunning. justin vernon (bon iver) wrote it while holed up in northern wisconsin for three months. he didn't see or talk to anybody during that time. knowing that, this music is perfect. his falsetto tv on the radio-esque vocals fit perfectly with the lo-fi recording of the whole album. it's folky and soulful and beautiful. fans of iron & wine, m. ward, and devendra banhart will love this album. i can't stop listening to it.

now you go listen.
